Product Description - Purple PassionNative to Java, the Velvet plant (also Purple Velvet plant, Purple Passion) is a woody-based evergreen perennial that is noted for its velvety, purple-haired foliage. In its native habitat, it will grow to 2 feet tall and spread to 4 feet wide over time. They can reach up to 9 feet in containers. Coarsely-toothed, ovate to elliptic, green leaves are covered with reddish-purple hairs. Weak stems are initially erect but tend to sprawl with time. Clusters of tiny, senecio-like, discoid, orange-yellow flowers appear in winter. The flowers have an unpleasant odor but generally do not appear when plants are grown in lower light. Purple Passion (Purple Passion vine) is a decumbent cultivar featuring trailing or twining stems.
Plant CarePurple Passion needs full sun to partial shade with a rich and well-drained soil. Its color intensifies with a larger exposure to light. The plant requires a minimum of around 55 degrees. Ideal temperatures are 60 degrees at night and 65 to 70 degrees during the day. The soil should be kept barely moist at all times. Over-watering may cause rot. Fertilize monthly during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer diluted to 1/2 the strength recommended on the label. During the winter months, cut the plant back to within 4 nodes from the pot. This helps to keep the plant growing vigorously and helps to keep the color richer. Old growth tends to lose its color. To avoid straggliness during the summer months and to encourage dense, brightly colored new growth, pinch off the tips of branches as they become too long. Purple Passion is easily propagated from cuttings at any time of the year. There are no serious insect or disease problems. Watch for aphids, whitefly, mealybugs, spider mites or scale.

At 65, I still recall my Mother having this gorgeous plant in her collection when I was young. I too, water too much and must be careful with this beauty. It IS hard to find - SO glad I came across this site; bought my Purple Passion at WalMart last week. Thank you Exotic Angels!

Even with stinky blooms it is my favorite house plant. My only problem is that the plant is hard to find.

This plant has been one of the most intriguing plants I have ever cared for. The colors are beautiful and it is sooo easy to care for. I now have at least seven plants from the exotic angels line and I love them all. Thank you all for bringing them to us and at such affordable prices. All in all I have only spent approximately $25 on all the plants I have from this line. Nothing beats that!
